I just finished adding 57 quotes by and about Union general John Pope. Take a look at them here. While most are from Peter Cozzens’s excellent book General John Pope A Life for the Nation, there are several from other sources as well. Pope is a controversial personality who despite leading the debacle at Second Bull Run in August 1862 was an important figure in both the Civil War and the Indian Wars thereafter. He was in fact one of the foremost authorities on Indian affairs and supported humanitarian measures toward the western tribes. John Pope’s progressive ideas about the management of the Bureau of Indian Affairs and its relationship to the War Department were considered (but ultimately not adopted) by every President from U.S. Grant to James Garfield. See a more in-depth article on John Pope here at South From the North Woods.
